Where Does Violent Crime Data Come From?

The violent crime data in this article has been obtained from the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The FBI issues information annually that reports violent crime in every city in California. Violent crimes include murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The most recent violent crime data available for California is from 2019 Crime in the United States Data Table 8.

How to Determine the Violent Crime Rate in a City

The most dangerous cities in California have been determined according to violent crime rate. The violent crime rate is calculated by dividing the number of reported violent crimes by the total population and then multiplying the result by 100,000. This provides the total number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

Crime rate is different than crime volume, which is the total number of crimes that occur in a city. Comparing the total number of crimes in each city is not as meaningful because each city has a different population. A city with millions of people will almost always have more crime than a city with only a couple of thousand people in its population.

In order to maintain consistency, crime rates in this article are compared per 100,000 residents. This allows a more uniform comparison of violent crime rates.

Factors that Affect the Violent Crime Rate

There are many factors that result in more violent crimes in an area. The statistics from the FBI do not analyze these factors. They only report the population of each city and numbers of reported violent crimes. Each city in California is unique. Some of the factors that affect volume and type of crime include the following:

  1. Population density and degree of urbanization
  2. Variations in composition of the population, particularly youth concentration
  3. Stability of the population with respect to residents; mobility, commuting patterns, and transient factors
  4. Economic conditions, including median income, poverty level, and job availability
  5. Modes of transportation and highway systems
  6. Cultural factors and educational, recreational, and religious characteristics
  7. Family conditions with respect to divorce and family cohesiveness
  8. Climate
  9. Effective strength of law enforcement agencies
  10. Administration and investigative emphasis on law enforcement
  11. Policies of other components of the criminal justice system (i.e., prosecutorial, judicial, correctional, and probational)
  12. Citizens’ attitudes toward crime
